"Occasionally it is a real pleasure"

I have often heard that this quote, refering to killing Benjamin Martin's dumbest kid, is the main reason why most writers and fans, see Tavington as a sadist.

Personally it is this quote and the rest of the monologue that convinces me all the more, that Tavington has no special feelings of enjoyments, when shooting little boys or burning down churches.

In that scene he sees Martin freeing his comrades and O'Hara makes it clear that according to the by Tavington much hated "rules of war" Martin will succeed with his plan unless he shows signs of agression. So everything Tavington said, was meant to provoke - which did not work, as Ben Martin already blow up a lot of steam by hacking up redcoats.
